

Demetrios C. “Jim” Batsides, of Chatham, NJ, formerly of Long Valley and Old Tappan, NJ, passed away on August 10th, 2021 at the age of 60. Jim was born in New York City on September 20th, 1960 to his parents Thea and Christos. As a youngster, he attended the Greek American Institute in New York City, before moving to Old Tappan, NJ with his parents and siblings in 1969.
Jim attended the Old Tappan Public Schools and was a graduate of Northern Valley Regional Highschool. He was a graduate of Villanova University, where he studied political science and classical studies and served as president of Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity; he then obtained a JD from Rutgers University School of Law. Jim enjoyed a long and successful career as an attorney and was a member of the New Jersey, New York and District of Columbia bars. A former director at the law firm of Gibbons, PC, and partner at Duane Morris, LLP; he was currently “of counsel” at the law firm of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney and Carpenter, LLP. Jim served as past President and Chairman of TANJ (Trial Lawyers Association of New Jersey), was recognized by his peers as a “Super Lawyer” from 2007–2021 and served as an appointed member of the Medical Malpractice Committee of the NJ Bar Association.
Jim was passionate about politics and sports. He was an avid NY Mets and Villanova basketball fan, and was a Little League Baseball Coach in Long Valley, where he coached his son Chris.
Jim is survived by his beloved children Alexa and Chris; his mother Thea; his brother Dr. George and his wife Duane; his sister Polly Mikelis and her husband Steve as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Christos. Jim was a generous, caring, kind and outstanding person who deeply cherished the relationships he had with his family and friends. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
The family will receive guests at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd., Westwood, NJ on Monday, August 16th from 4-8PM with Trisagion Prayers at 7PM. A Funeral Service celebrating Jim's life and faith will be held at Metropolitan Cathedral Of St. John The Theologian G.O. Church in Tenafly, NJ on Tuesday, August 17th at 10AM with interment at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ to follow. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Heart Association.
