On January 3, 2026, Don Cummings passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old. Born in Yonkers, New York, he held many beloved memories of his childhood in “The City of Hills.” He attended St. Joseph School and High School of Commerce, studied accounting at Manhattan College and had a long career as a comptroller for car dealerships, mostly in Bergen County, New Jersey. With his wife and children, he lived in Peekskill, Spring Valley and Suffern, NY, Ramsey, NJ, and 27 years retired in Palm Beach County, Florida. He was cared for at home in Cresskill, NJ during the last five years.
He loved to play golf and tennis, golfing many days of the week for decades. He enjoyed watching all sports, especially basketball and baseball. A devoted husband and father, a great reader with a big memory, a lover of classic movies, Don was also a wonderful role model for progressive compassion and a strong work ethic. He was reliable and enjoyable in many ways, always ready with a joke or a pun, appreciated by his immediate and large extended family and loyal friends.
Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Janet Rita Cummings, and his seven older siblings, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Sally Cummings (T Gundling), Don Cummings (Adam Waring), Greg Cummings (Debra Cummings), his three grandchildren, Daniel Cummings (Holli Gibbs), Evan Gundling, Paul LaDuca, his great-grandson, Jace Cummings, his brother-in-law, Joseph Porcello, and many nieces and nephews. He was greatly loved.
A gathering on Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 with services at 2:00 will take place at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ 07675, followed by a celebratory meal.
Memorial gifts to the American Lung Association, Lung.org, would be appreciated.
