Elizabeth (Libby) Strype Weidmann, a long-time resident of Old Tappan, NJ, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2021 surrounded by her family’s love after a lengthy illness. Born August 27,1951 to the late Frederick C. and Louise M. Strype, Libby was raised in Ho-Ho-Kus and Ridgewood, NJ, and enjoyed summers in Monmouth Beach, NJ.
Libby attended Ho-Ho-Kus Elementary School, and graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1969. As a young girl, she developed life-long interests in cooking, genealogy, politics, and local history. Libby graduated from The College of Mount Saint Vincent, NYC, in 1973. Trained in the Montessori method, she was a caring and committed teacher at the Spring School, Tenafly, for several years.
At a high school retreat in the summer of 1967, Libby met the love of her life, William (Bud) John Weidmann. She was soon spending her Saturdays rooting for Bud and the St. Joseph’s Montvale football team, and her Sundays learning the art of Italian cooking with Bud’s family. This was the beginning of over 50 years of devotion to each other. Libby and Bud were married June 9,1972 at St. Luke’s Church,
Ho-Ho-Kus. After deciding to build their home in Old Tappan, Libby, barely 5’2” tall, helped her husband pour concrete and learned how to spackle sheetrock. Family was always most important to the couple, so they designed a dining room large enough to hold everyone. Many memorable family events highlighted by Libby’s delicious meals were celebrated at the Weidmann’s dining table.
Blessed with two sons, William (Buddy) and Robert (Bob), Libby parented with patience and insight, guiding her boys as they became the fine young men they are today. Both sons, and her daughter-in-law, Adrian, have been a source of continual support for Libby. Delighted with the arrival of each of her four beautiful grandchildren, Libby immensely enjoyed being their grandmother.
Libby lived her family’s tradition of service and was very active in her community, including the PTA, Cub Scouts, and CCD. In 1985 she joined the Woman’s Club of Old Tappan. During 35 years of dedicated membership, Libby chaired many key departments, headed the By-Laws Committee, and served as President of the Club from 1993-1995. She will be remembered for spearheading many popular activities including Achievement Day, Babysitting Clinic, Breakfast with Santa, Memorial Day Parade, Rag-a-Muffin Parade and Old Tappan Town Day. For many years, she ran the Craft Fair and helped organize the rummage sale. The New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs inscribed her name in the Honor Roll Book, as well as the Order of the Lily Book, in recognition of her untiring loyalty, friendliness and sincere devotion to the Club, the district and the community. Libby was also presented with the Honor Roll Charm and Lily Pin.
In addition to her husband, Libby is survived by her two sons: William Joseph Weidmann and his wife, Adrian, and their four children, Bella, Carina, William and Tobias, all of South Glastonbury, CT; and Robert Thomas Weidmann, living at home. She is also survived by her siblings: Susan Cooke (Charles), Kathleen Sheprow (Mark), Fred Strype, and Margaret Hartnett (Bruce). Also, by her sisters-in-law: Doreen Stickney (Tim), Cecelia Landin (Rick), and Mary Ellen Snow (Joseph). Libby was a favorite Aunt to her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A loyal, generous and ever-present friend, Libby especially cherished her colleagues in the Woman’s Club. A spiritual person, she felt blessed by the numerous people in her community who became her “guardian angels” and brought her great comfort. The family is truly grateful to the many doctors and caregivers who attended to her needs, in particular, the staff at County Manor Rehabilitation, Tenafly. And, especially, we offer thankful prayers for her beloved Bud, her fierce advocate and chief consoler, who held her hand in his, and her heart in his heart.
Libby will be remembered and missed as a devoted, caring, giving, positive and gentle soul who never wavered in her commitment to her family, her friends and her community. Her courage and strength will be an inspiration to us all.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Visitation on Wednesday, March 17, from 5-8PM at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd., Westwood, NJ. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM on Thursday, March 18 at St. Pius X Church, Old Tappan, NJ. If you are unable to attend, the service will be live streamed via YouTube/ stpiusxoldtappannj. Interment will follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY.
