Our beloved Mother, Elsie Jockel (nee Kyriaki Bangos) 92, of Harrington Park, NJ, passed away with family beside her on 1/1/2024 at Englewood Health. Elsie is finally at rest after fighting a difficult battle with illness.
Elsie was Born in Queens, New York, 1/4/1931 to Peter and Anastasia Bangos. After growing up in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, she and her family moved to Fort Lee, New Jersey. She married Eugene Jockel in 8/17/58 who passed away in 2017.
Elsie was an active mother of four children, playing tennis, bowling on amateur leagues and working part-time as an administrative assistant when her children were older.
She was an involved member of her church, St. Anthony Orthodox Church, singing in the choir and helping with the annual church festivals and other events.
A fiercely Independent woman, she continued to work until her most recent hospitalization, at the Harrington Park Public Library, covering and cataloging books.
She loved to travel, enjoying long car trips exploring the USA with Eugene, bus trips with her sister and friends, and trips with her family to New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.
She would fearlessly take the six hour bus ride to Boston by herself, well into her 70’s.
Elsie was a loving , nurturing and caring mother to Peter Jockel, David Jockel and wife Eileen, Mary Jockel and partner Rich Hobbs and Stacy Choi and husband Kue Choi. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Matthew Choi, much loved sister of the late Michael Bangos and Pauline Leary, and a devoted Aunt, survived by many cherished nieces and nephews.
Elsie will be remembered as a dedicated and loving mother, sister, aunt and friend who tirelessly gave of herself and whose spirit will be carried in our hearts.
Her strength was a source of inspiration to us all and she will be deeply missed, forever loved and forever remembered.
