

JOHNSON, Ethel, 98, of Harrington Park, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017. She was born in Spring TX to Rev. & Mrs. Hoemann. The family moved to Battle Creek, IA where she was confirmed and graduated from high school as Valedictorian. A year later she completed the Executive Secretary course at Lincoln School of Commerce. Upon passing the Civil Service Examination, she went to Washington, DC to work for the Census Bureau and the 1940 Census. In 1946 she was introduced to Edgar Johnson in Savannah, GA. They were married in 1949 and moved to Harrington Park, NJ in 1950 where she has resided for the past 60 years. Edgar died suddenly in 2001 and their only daughter, Susan, died in 2002. Ethel spent much of her time in church related activities- choir, youth group and later, the lady's prayer group. As a library trustee, she helped promote memorialization of the Harrington Park Library by vote in 1988. Her interest took her to county and state activities. She assisted in developing a computerized history of Harrington Park. Even up until her death, she remained active in church activities, historical events on Harrington Park and the Federal Retirees Assoc. Her Federal Employment included the Dept. of Agriculture, Atomic Energy Commission and the U.S. Customs Dept. from which she retired. Ethel is survived by her sister, Ruth H. Bogen of Rockford, IL and her 12 nieces and nephews. A private cremation is planned followed by scattering at sea. The Memorial Service celebrating Ethel’s life and faith will be held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Closter, NJ on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 12PM with a luncheon to follow.
