

Frank A. Magyer, 88, of Emerson, NJ, died at Oradell Healthcare Center on Monday June 22, 2009. Born and raised in Edgewater, NJ, he was a graduate of Dwight Morrow High School and St. Peter's College in Jersey City. He served in the US Army during WWII with the 63rd Infantry Div. Co D as a medic in Germany. After the war he joined the Army Reserves Intelligence Division until his retirement as a Major in 1965. Before entering the teaching profession, Mr. Magyer helped at the family business "American House" Grocery Store located on River Road in Edgewater. During this time he served as Commander of Legion Post 116 and on the Edgewater Board of Ed. Mr. Magyer began teaching science in 1958 at Cliffside Park Jr. High School in School 4 where he met and married Gloria Echentille, a first grade teacher at that school and immediately began residence in Emerson. After a few years teaching in Fort Lee High School, Mr. Magyer joined the staff at Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest as a guidance counselor until he retired in 1985. Mr. Magyer was active in many civic, service and educational associations including the Bergen County Guidance Association, Northern Valley Educational Association, NJEA and BCEA. Mr. Magyer was a member of Church of the Assumption Parish where he served as a former CCD principal. He was a member of the Emerson Senior Citizens, VFW and American Legion, the Fairlawn Amateur Radio Club and the NJ Chrysanthemum Growers. He served Emerson in many capacities; on the planning board, Election Board and as a former president of the Board of Health.He is survived by his wife Gloria Echentille Magyer, two daughters Denise and Carla, three grandchildren Alex, Michael and Nicole, and his nephew Stefan Galik and his wife Gail.Funeral from Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ on Friday June 26, 2009 at 9:30 AM. Funeral Mass at the Church of the Assumption Emerson, NJ at 10:30 AM. Interment to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery Tenafly, NJ. The family will receive their relatives and friends on Thursday June 25th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to your favorite charity.
