McGOVERN George T., 93, formerly of Oradell, NJ and Hilton Head, SC, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born in Staten Island, NY on August 14, 1925, to George and Mary Jane (nee Taigue) McGovern. He graduated from Memorial High School in West New York, NJ and received his college degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II. Along with his brothers, he owned and operated G.T. McGovern Trucking and Warehouse Co. Inc., in Bayonne, NJ, a business started by his father in 1918. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jean (nee von Doehren), his son Charles as well as his brothers Howard and Charles. He was a loving and devoted father of Karen Hirsch (Donald), George (Cyndy), Jane Heede (Warren), Nancy Walters (Craig), Neil (Nicole) and Kenneth (Maureen); adored grandfather of 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; dear brother of May Best and Betty Black as well as brother in-law of Therese and Mary Ann. George was a long-time member of both Hackensack and Moss Creek Golf Clubs. His greatest pleasures were watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up and participate in various activities and sporting events that they loved. He especially enjoyed going on adventurous family trips such as renting a sailboat and sailing in the Caribbean, driving an RV in the great South-West, captaining house-boat excursions up the Hudson River and driving across country with his grandson. Dad loved listening to Frank Sinatra and other Big Band music. He was an avid golfer and cherished all his golfing buddies and life-long high school friends. He was a special dad who will be missed very much, but we are relieved that he is now at peace and reunited with his beautiful wife Jean and son Charles. Family will receive guests at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd., Westwood, NJ on Wednesday, December 26th from 4-8PM. The Mass celebrating George’s life and faith will be held on Thursday, December 27th at 10AM at St Joseph R.C. Church in Oradell, NJ with interment at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery in Paramus, NJ to follow. As an expression of thanks for the extraordinary care that Dad received, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Armenian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 70 Main St., Emerson, NJ 07630.
