Being a nurse, I know I'm not supposed to have a favorite patient or a favorite resident, but it was no secret that Gladys was my favorite.  Every morning she would flash me a huge smile, gasp like she was surprised and delighted to see me, and open her arms wide for me to step into. And she'd give me a hug. Not one of those brief, pat-you-on-the-back-then-quickly-back-away-hugs. She enveloped me and squeezed me tight like I was her own grandchild, as if we were just reuniting again for the first time in weeks or months. That's why I always started my days seeing Gladys. She made my days better. Half the time I didn't know which one of us was taking care of the other, because she always deflected my questions about her with her own questions about me, asking if I needed anything, if I ate yet, how my day was going. You could see her loving and giving nature shine through. I may have not met her until the last few years of her life, but she made me feel like I knew her forever, like she was my family and I was hers. And I miss her. I miss her terribly. I wish we could've had one last hug.
