

Born on December 6, 1930, in Union City, NJ, to Francis and Elizabeth McDermott, Jack was raised in Edgewater, NJ. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. Following his time in the service he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University where he received a BA in Accounting and worked for Ralph B. Carter Pump Co. A man of deep faith and service, Jack was a devoted parishioner of the Catholic Church and was active in the American Legion, where he served as Post Commander, the Knights of Columbus, Police Athletic League and local civic and political organizations.
Jack loved spending time on the golf course and taking annual family vacations to the Catskills and to LBI. Whether he was on the golf course, checking crab traps in Barnegat Bay, or simply sitting around the table with his family, Jack found his greatest happiness in being with the people he loved.
Beloved husband of the late Helen McDermott (née Walsh). Devoted father of John F. McDermott, Jr. and his wife Diane, Myles P. McDermott and his wife Mary, Francis X. McDermott and his wife Jennifer, and Patrick T. McDermott and his wife Tiiu. Loving grandfather of Johnny, Lauren, Lindsay, Carly, Sean, Ryan, Nick, Patrick, and Colin, and proud great-grandfather of John "Jack" McDermott IV, Owen, McKenna, and Riley. Affectionately known as "Papa Jack" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Kevin McDermott and the late Francis McDermott, Muriel, and Betty Ann. Jack is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Jack was loved by the Walsh family and treated as a brother, a reflection of the kindness and respect he earned throughout his life. His quiet strength, unwavering faith, and devotion to his family will be remembered always.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Jack's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Visitation will be held at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ 07675, US, on June 29, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, 2 Fremont Ave, Park Ridge, NJ 07656, US, on June 30, 2026, at 10:30 am.
Interment will follow at Mt Carmel Cemetery, 10 Serpentine Rd, Tenafly, NJ 07670, US, on June 30, 2026, at 12:15 pm.
