John Joseph Rinaldi

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of John Joseph Rinaldi, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle to many nieces and nephews. John passed on January 8th, 2026, at the age of 66 surrounded by his loving family. He lived a life defined by courage, service, and compassion.

John was born on November 19th, 1959, in Westwood to John and Denise Rinaldi. He was raised in River Vale with his four sisters Patricia Berard, Donna Montesano, Ellen Woods and Denise Benson. John started his career with the IBEW, Local Union No. 164 in 1985. Later, he moved to commercial real estate and ended his career as a project manager at Westpoint. Answering the call to serve, John dedicated many years of his life to serving as a firefighter for the Fort Lee, Old Tappan and River Vale Fire Departments, where he proudly served as Fire Chief. He was known for his bravery, leadership, humor, and compassion.

John married his wife Nancy on June 11th, 2011, sharing 14 years of love and laughter together. John is also survived by his daughters Lisa Cecchini (Anthony), Kristen Ciaglia (Eric), and stepchildren Erin Collins Ricciardella (Daniel), Paul Collins (Catalina), William Collins (Katherine). John was a proud grandfather to Dominic, Nico, Daniel, Eve, Saige, Nicole, and Keira. He enjoyed playing softball, watching his beloved Giants, coaching the River Vale Raiders and the Northern Valley Eagles, spending time at the lake, and with his family.

John believed deeply in serving others, both on and off duty. His legacy lives on through the lives he saved, the firefighters he mentored, and the love he shared with family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday January 12th from 3-9pm at Beckers Funeral Home. A funeral service with firefighter honors will take place on Tuesday January 13th at 11:00am at the funeral home, followed by “Last Call” at the Old Tappan Firehouse.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Old Tappan Fire Department, at 231 Old Tappan Road, Old Tappan, NJ 07675.
