Joseph Sumberac, 88, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, in River Vale, New Jersey. Born on November 9, 1937, Joseph’s life journey began in the former Yugoslavia. In 1962, he immigrated to the United States as a refugee, settling in New York and building a remarkable life for himself and his family.
Joseph, known to friends as "Pepe," dedicated his entire career to the restaurant industry, ultimately finding his calling as the former owner of The Estate at Florentine Gardens in River Vale. His passion for hospitality and fine cuisine left an indelible mark on all who visited his establishment.
A man of many talents and interests, Joseph played soccer for the Cosmos Soccer Club in Queens during his younger years. He had a deep love for cooking traditional Croatian and Italian dishes, often sharing meals with loved ones over a glass of white wine. Joseph cherished entertaining friends and family and found joy in traveling, visiting his siblings in Nedešćina, Italy and France, as well as in-laws in Switzerland.
Joseph was a devoted husband to Charlotte, his wife of 61 years. Together they built a loving family that includes their daughters Margaret Parhizkaran and her husband Mehdi, and Heidi Williams and her husband Troy. He was also a proud grandfather to Danielle, Laila and her husband James, and Craig.
A memorial service will be held at a later time to honor Joseph’s life and legacy.
