Ken devoted more than four decades to the commercial baking industry, building a distinguished career that spanned bakery ingredient sales, ownership of his own retail bakery, supermarket bakery leadership, merchandising, and consulting. Ken graduated from Paramus Catholic High School and later from the American Institute of Baking (AIB) in 1988. He also earned the Doctorate of Food Service (DFS) professional designation. Ken served for more than a decade as Director of Bakery Sales and Merchandising for Kings Super Markets, as well as in senior bakery leadership roles at H Mart, The Fresh Market, and Fairway Market.
In 2014, Ken drew upon his extensive professional experience to establish his own consulting firm, advising supermarket in-store bakeries and independent retail bakeries. His expertise and leadership earned him national recognition throughout his career. He was named one of Modern Baking Magazine’s “Bakers to Watch” and was honored as Bakery Operator of the Year. Ken also served as President of the New Jersey Bakers Board of Trade, becoming the first supermarket retailer to hold that position in the organization’s 90-year history. He later served as president of the Retail Bakers of America.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ken served as Grand Knight of the Our Lady of the Assumption #5819 Knights of Columbus Chapter in Emerson, NJ, reflecting his deep Catholic faith and commitment to community. He was a devoted New York Giants fan and former season ticket holder, sharing that passion with family and friends.
Ken was the beloved son of Joan Downey and the late John F. Downey. He was the former husband of Teresa Downey and the father of Kenneth Jr. (Lauren), John, and Andrew. He is also survived by his loving sister, Kathleen Jaffe, and her husband, Stephen, and was the cherished uncle of Taylor, Brenna, Erin, and Kevin. Ken was an old soul and a friend to everyone who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Westwood. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption in Emerson, with interment to follow at Maryrest Cemetery.
