Les Burger, 72, of Hillsdale, didn’t particularly want an obituary. However, he lost his say in the matter when he passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026. As he was a well-known and much-beloved friend, neighbor, softball player, woodworker, and theatre parent in this community, his family thought some people might want to know the news.
Born and raised in Teaneck with his brothers Walt, Ken, and Peter, Les developed a love of music, an appreciation for family trips in the car, and a wry sense of humor. His quick wit and easygoing charm endeared him to family, friends, and hundreds of acquaintances throughout his life. He spent 50 “long, deliriously happy years” (as he liked to say) by the side of his wife Kathi, making her laugh and caring lovingly for their home. In later years, he enjoyed sharing that home with his daughter, Merielle, her husband, Tom, and their daughters. Antoinette and Cordelia have many sweet memories of times shared with their Grandpa. Like him, Antoinette loves to carefully plan and execute a project. Like him, Cordelia loves to play the trumpet. Merielle inherited from her father a fondness for musicals, a commitment to doing all things with care, and several dozen tools she does not know how to use.
At Les’s request, no public services will be held. His family will hold a private celebration of his life in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (mda.org). Though…Chicken Delight, Davey’s Irish Pub, and Celebrity Cruises will miss Les’s loyal patronage, so if you were moved to enjoy a large cheese pizza, a cold pint, or a Bermuda cruise in his honor, that would certainly be appreciated as well.
