Margarete Herold, 85, of Westwood, NJ, passed, away May 7, 2019. Margarete was born in Zirndorf, Germany, to Michael and Pauline Grethlein. While still in Germany, she married her husband, Hans, in 1951 and gave birth to her first son, Norbert. Seeking greater opportunity, the family immigrated to the United States in 1956 when she was only 23. The family originally lived in Hackensack, where she made friends with her neighbors. Through those friends she learned English conversationally and subsequently became a US citizen in 1961. The family purchased a home in Westwood in 1962, where they established roots and passed a lifetime together. She gave birth to her second son, Ken, in 1967. In her younger days Margarete was quite active. She created a bountiful garden in the backyard that supplied the family with vegetables for many years. While living in Westwood, she worked at Foremost Caterers and rode her bike to work. The picture of her riding that bike around town for errands made her a local fixture until she learned to drive. Margarete loved to bake. She made a variety of cakes and pies with the freshest fruit the season offered. When the holidays came, the house became a baking haven. Many different special cookies and treats were baked, including her favorite treat: the traditional German Christmas Stollen. Margarete was an avid reader and quite enjoyed crocheting during the winter evenings. She loved to make colorful blankets that were gifts for friends or family. She loved to have company and made sure there was something sweet to share. Margarete cherished every moment sitting around the kitchen table with visiting family or friends. A pot of coffee and some donuts would fuel the laughs for hours. Backyard picnics, especially when shared with neighbors and friends, were cherished. During her later years, she loved sitting on the front porch, enjoying the company of the neighbors who graced her presence. Margarete is survived by her dedicated husband, Hans; her son Norbert and his wife, Maggie; her son Ken, his wife, Andrea, and their children, Sabrina and Jacob; her sister, Ute Bauer; she was predeceased by her brother, Gerhard.

Our condolences to Hans, Norbert, Ken and family.

We will always remember Marga with great joy. She loved people, she enjoyed a fun party, and had a hearty laugh.

Memories of Marga too numerous to mention: here are just a few:

Meeting her at our clothes lines in the morning; Coffee breaks with whatever "sweets" we had available; Walking into her kitchen and smelling something wonderful baking in the oven; Shared hero sandwiches from The deli for a lunch break; The gang -- Ken, Keith, Karin and Erich playing baseball in our backyards to the shouts of "get out of the garden": The lemonade stands – Erich always insisting on including cookies; Reading the Sunday paper in her backyard and discussing what baked goodie or fruit to have with coffee later in the afternoon: Combined "leftovers" from both refrigerators for a summer evening supper feast: Special German recipes Marga prepared and shared with us: The many confirmation, graduation parties she helped us put together: The many New Year’s Eve celebrations; The great Kentucky Derby Day get-togethers accompanied by the famous mint juleps made with the fresh mint from her backyard. Each of us took turns winning the $0.25 bet even betting one time on a horse blind in one eye.

It was the beginning of a cherished 50+ year friendship when we moved to Third Ave next door to you. We four have shared our good times (and sad times), and survived our children's growing pains, but always knew we could rely on each other for support. She was a true friend, companion and confidante. We shared so many happy memories and experiences and they will comfort us through the sadness and loss we feel now.

Hans, God has blessed you and Marga, with a wonderful family and now has given her His peace. We pray that the Lord will bless you and grant you and yours comfort and relief in your time of sorrow

Love, Barbara and Charlie

My condolences to Hans, Norbert, Ken and the rest of the family.

If you grew up on 3rd or 4th ave in Westwood......you knew Margaret very well. She was an incredible person who cared deeply about family and friends. She treated us kids on the block as her own!

I spent a good part of my youth on Margaret's porch or sitting @ that kitchen table drinking coffee telling stories or playing in their backyard. (Probably breaking something or getting in trouble...LOL).

Margaret always supported you and listened when you needed advise. She was a great influence to all of us!

Rest in Peace Margaret
