Marie B. Weir

Marie was predeceased by her husband, John J. Weir and daughter Maureen P. Weir. She is survived by her two sons, Jack Weir and his wife Diana of Palm Beach Gardens FL, Gary Weir and his wife Kara of Hillsdale NJ, four grandchildren, Ben Weir and his wife Meg of Downingtown PA, Corinne Weir and her fiancé Eric of Brooklyn NY, Andy Weir of New York NY and Grace Weir of Boston MA. She was a beloved great grandmom to Logan. She is also survived by a brother, Frank Barbieri of Kissimmee FL and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Mary Barbieri and her brother Anthony Barbieri.

Marie grew up in South Amboy NJ and took great joy in the pleasures of small-town life, especially being surrounded by a large boisterous family. She loved getting spoiled by her aunts and uncles, who bought her dresses and took her for trips to New York City, and she was best friends with her first cousin Gloria.

She was baptized, received first communion and married at St. Mary’s Church in South Amboy and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. She eventually met her husband and moved, first to Iselin and then Edison to raise their family. For over 20 years, she was the Office Manager at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in Edison until her retirement in 1995.

Marie lost her husband shortly after her 50th birthday and for the next 48 years, she exhibited a strong streak of independence. She made friends with a core group of women and together they traveled the world, from China to Israel, visiting most countries in Europe and traveling all around the USA. She made friends wherever she went and maintained correspondences with friends in China and Scotland long after she visited.

She was an active volunteer at the George Street Playhouse and State Theater in New Brunswick for many years. She tap-danced and played bocce into her eighties and raised money for the Leisure Village West Ambulance Corp.

Marie took special pride in her grandchildren and made an effort to be there for all their special events, even driving to Florida several times to spend extra time with her grandchildren. Her final road trips were to spend time with her newborn great grandson.

A Mass celebrating Marie’s life and faith will be held at Our Lady of Mother of the Church R.C. Church, Woodcliff Lake NJ on Saturday, August 15th at 10AM with entombment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in South Amboy, NJ to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Marie’s name to Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
