Mary Lou was the oldest of three children born in St. Louis, Missouri to Mary J. and Louis H. Grone II. She was educated by the nuns of the Visitation Academy. After graduating from Webster College she taught school in downtown St. Louis. Bored by her prospects, she seized an opportunity to teach the children of Mobil Oil employees in Anaco, Venezuela. It was there that she met her future husband Paul Golier and many other employees who would become lifelong friends. Paul’s career allowed them to live abroad and travel extensively throughout Asia and Europe. She was a gracious hostess whose meals were treasured by family, friends, and Paul’s clients. Mary Lou was also a passionate gardener who spent countless hours cultivating her flower and vegetable beds and pruning her roses and raspberry bushes. An avid bridge player, she enjoyed games with several groups during the week and on most Saturday nights with Paul and their friends.
Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt, sister and grandmother. In 2001 she donated a kidney to her eldest daughter. She is survived by her daughters Susan Wright (Gregor Winkel) and Julia Golier (Bill Bornmann), her grandchildren Amelia and William Bornmann, her sister Susan McKee, and many nieces and nephews. Her brother Louis H. Grone III predeceased her earlier this month.
The family is grateful for all the support she received from neighbors, friends and family and the exemplary care she received from the Emerson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 27th at 11:15 am at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the NYC Hemophilia Chapter: https://www.nyhemophilia.org/golier/
