To her parents, she was My-Renee. To her ITC family, she was Reneé. To her children, she was Mom. To my brother, sister, & me she was always Nana.
At 91 years old, my Nana lived a rivaled life. Up until her 88th birthday, she was a strong & independent woman — working a full-time job, driving, & living unapologetically on her own terms.
She never lost that Irish fight... those that knew her know she was stubborn as a bull! Over the past few years, she defied statistics by all medical standards. Through one broken hip & one fractured femur, she was able to make it through two life-threatening surgeries, gracing us all with her playful tongue-out expression & a very deliberate middle finger. This time around, she spent a week in the hospital & recovered from an overwhelming infection - against all odds - a 2% chance.
The irony! Our grandmother managed to clear a septic infection at 91 years old, proving to us all that she truly was a living, breathing Wonder Woman. A week ago, she had let myself, my sister Brielle, & my cousin Danielle know that her strength came from staying away from men. From her hospital bed she mentioned she would take kisses from us, but she wouldn’t be kissing any man any time soon! We quickly learned there was always the exception for her son Robert, my brother Anthony, and her favorite boy Sean Michael. She even managed to tell us late last Friday that she wanted an orchid-colored dress to wear to Sean’s wedding later this year.
It is only appropriate that Nana took her last breath peacefully in her sleep early Friday morning on International Women’s Day, leaving her legacy for us to continue to tell. Her Irish Eyes are resting eternally, but her soul is free & flying.
I know my father - her “Marky Maypo” - has missed her very much & was eager to welcome her home. I will live each of my days with the hope that when my time comes, I will see those beautiful blue eyes again & be greeted by her sarcasm & wit. I love you, Nana.
