

As husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, Robert Peter Sandt, Sr. would be the first to tell you, he lived a wonderful life. He died peacefully on October 3rd at his home with his beloved wife Kathy by his side. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Bob was drafted into the United States Army in 1964and served in Vietnam with the Big Red One Division, Artillery Battalion. Upon his return to Brooklyn in 1968, he and Kathy married.They arrived in Hillsdale in 1977. He thought of it as a little bit of heaven, a house, backyard where his 4 boys could play, good schools, a community pool, friendly neighbors, and an opportunity to join a volunteer fire department, which had always been his dream. He served the Hillsdale Fire Department for 30 years, serving as its treasurer for most of his years and rising to the rank of Chief. In 1994, he began his career as Hillsdale Borough Clerk. He admired and enjoyed the people with whom he worked and was grateful for the many chances he had to help his neighbors. Bob additionally served the community as a Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Baptist Church and volunteering with The Grayheads of Habitat for Humanity. Bob will be remembered by the many people who loved him as a noble man who lit up every room he entered with his perpetual smile and love of life. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his four sons, Robert Jr and wife Donna, Gerard and wife Axelle, Edward and wife Kerry, Christopher and wife Nicole, and his twelve grandchildren: Justine, William, Katherine, Allison, Gabrielle, Jillian, Carolyn, Madeleine, Emma, Charlotte, Grace and Claire. He is also survived by his brothers Edward and David and sister Kathleen and his sister-in-law Maryanne, his brother-in-law Larry and his many nieces and nephews. A visitation for Robert will be held Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd, Westwood, New Jersey 07675. A mass of christian burial will occur Monday, October 7, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 69 Valley St, Hillsdale, NJ 07642. A committal will occur Monday, October 7, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Ascension Cemetery, 650 Saddle River Road, Airmont, New York 10952. A military honors will occur Monday, October 7, 2024 at 11:45 AM at Ascension Cemetery, 650 Saddle River Road, Airmont, New York 10952.
