Dear Jill---  I am so shocked and sad to hear of Steve's passing.  Steve worked with me in Orangeburg, and I was always happy to have him there and missed his skill when he left, always keeping me connected and my machine out of trouble.  After he left, I kept loosely in touch, though he did not mention being ill.  We had similar views on politics and social issues, which I was happy to share because it seems so damn rare to find someone on the left anymore.  It will be difficult to replace him, he was a unique guy and one of a fading breed of persons who could give careful thought to almost any subject.  Your words here have captured his spirit; I too will miss his cantankerous commentary on the crazy world in which we live, and I know you will find it difficult in his absence.  This is truly sad news for me, and I wish you the support and love you will need from family and friends to persist through this sad time.

Jill, I'm so sorry about your loss. I hope you can recall the wonderful times and love you shared. My thoughts are with you. Hang in there old friend. There are a lot of people out there for you. Me included.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead.

I first met Steve when we were both in 8th grade. We used to have involved political arguments about topics that neither of us knew much. He took a conservative position and I a liberal one. 
We discovered a mutual interest in science fiction and fantasy, Steve turned me on to Tolkien. We became friends and over the next few years Steve moved from a conservative viewpoint to a strong anti-war leftist point of view. 
Steve was a pretty solid musician, under his influence I learned to appreciate rock in a much more technical way.
In many ways I am the person I am today because of my friendship with Steve. I will forever cherish our friendship. I will miss him.
Jill, I believe that meeting and marrying you was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness I felt when I heard about Steve's death.  I did not know Steve personally, but I am sure he was a great husband, companion and friend. As the saying goes “Behind every great man there is a great woman to keep him straight”
