Thomas M. Ott, passed away suddenly on March 19, 2026, in Englewood, New Jersey, at the age of 92. His passing followed several months of declining health. Born on September 19, 1933, in New York City, New York, Thomas lived a life deeply rooted in devotion to his family, career, faith, and community.
Thomas spent his early childhood in Jackson Heights, Queens, before moving with his family to Tenafly, New Jersey, at the age of seven. He attended public schools in Tenafly, where he enjoyed sports, music, and drama. After graduating from high school, he pursued higher education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science in 1955.
While attending university, Thomas met Lucy Tibbals of Eastham, Massachusetts. Their love story began during their college years and culminated in their marriage in May 1955. The couple graduated together shortly thereafter and embarked on a life filled with shared adventures and enduring love. They were married for over 70 years.
From 1955 to 1957, Thomas served honorably in the U.S. Air Force. His service included training at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois—where their first son, Peter, was born—and a posting in Germany—where their second son, David, was born. Upon completing his military service, Thomas returned home to further his education and earned a Master of Science degree in Food Science from the University of Massachusetts in 1958.
Thomas enjoyed a remarkable career spanning more than four decades. In 1958 he began working for General Foods in Tarrytown, New York. His career took him and his growing family to Nampa, Idaho—where their third son, Stephen, was born—before they returned to New York in 1961. Settling into a home in Westwood, New Jersey, Thomas and Lucy built a life together there for nearly 65 years. Over the course of his 33-year tenure at General Foods, Thomas made significant contributions to innovative food products and processes. Following his time at General Foods, he spent an additional decade advancing food safety technology with Foodco.
Faith played a central role in Thomas's life. He was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Paramus and later Ridgewood, New Jersey for 65 years. A lifelong lover of music, he found joy in choral singing and shared his passion for music with those around him. Beyond his professional and spiritual pursuits, Thomas embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He was an enthusiastic traveler with a particular fondness for Italy and its rich culture. He enjoyed skiing and tennis and was a devoted fan of the New York Mets. A lover of fine food and wine, he cherished moments spent around the table with loved ones. Summers were often spent on Cape Cod at Lucy's former family home—a cherished tradition filled with beach days, seafood feasts, and time with extended family.
In memory of their late son David—who passed away in 1994—Thomas and Lucy established "David's Fund," a charity dedicated to supporting music therapy research. This cause held deep personal significance for Thomas and reflected his enduring commitment to making a positive impact on others.
Thomas was predeceased by his parents Knud and Charlotte Ott; his brother Owen Ott; and his beloved son David Ott. He is survived by his devoted wife Lucy; sons Peter (Lynda) and Stephen (Carmen); grandsons Nathan (Naira) and Daniel (Cassie); four great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy.
Memorial gifts may be sent to David's Fund at 670 Hammond Hill Rd., West Windsor, VT 05089 or to the charity of your choice.
Thomas M. Ott will be remembered as a man of integrity who lived a full and meaningful life surrounded by love. May his memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
