Born in Nyack, NY on November 8, 1928, to Victor R. Castner and Gladys Brill Castner, he was a life-long resident of Westwood, New Jersey, graduating from Westwood High School. While serving in the Army for four years just after the end of hostilities, he was stationed in both Germany and Japan during the reconstruction efforts. Upon returning to Westwood, he started work for Orange & Rockland Utilities where he worked for 40+ years as a licensed surveyor, eventually becoming head of the department.
He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Westwood with his wife Joanne. Victor (also known as Bud to friends and family) enjoyed playing sports year-round, from basketball and ice skating to softball, bowling, golf, and fishing. He also liked to take vacations with his family and travel, but he most enjoyed spending time with his family during holidays and special weekends.
Victor is predeceased by his loving wife Joanne (nee Vogler). He is survived by his sons Bruce Castner and his wife Joy of Austin, Texas; Paul Castner and his wife Barbara of Effort, Pennsylvania; and by his sister Jean Belits and her husband Peter of Washington. Victor also is survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; Chris Castner and his wife Rebekah and their daughter Chloe; Kate Castner and her husband RJ and their son Hayes; Henry Castner; Jon Castner and his wife Tara and their children Rhys and Casey; Sarah Castner; Brandon Castner.
The family will receive guests at a visitation that will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 155 2nd Ave, Westwood, New Jersey on Saturday September 23 at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service starting at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.
