“Bill” was a graduate of the School of Machine and Metal Trades in the Bronx, New York before entering the United States Army where he served stateside during the Korean War. He met his first wife, Barbara Anne Lert Chapman, who predeceased him in 1983. They moved from the Bronx to Rochester, NY where he attended and graduated from the School of Printing at Rochester Institute of Technology. Bill went on to work as a plant manager in the printing and thermoplastic industry eventually forming and owning PTP Industries of Baltimore, MD. Bill retired from the industry in 1997.
Bill was predeceased by his parents Cecil and Dorothea Chapman. Bill is survived by his wife of 20 years, Jane, his son, Steven and wife Donna, of Freehold, NJ, Russell of Hillsdale, NJ, Laura Anne and her partner, Jamie L. Whelan, of Flagstaff, AZ, and Debra Anne of Montvale, NJ. Beloved grandfather of Amanda and her husband, Lester Parada, Jennifer and her husband, Eric Vanartsdalen, Travis Chapman, Brian Hensley, Sabrina Chapman, and Steven Hensley. Cherished great grandfather of Luca William Parada and Ella Marie Vanartsdalen. He is also survived by his step-sons, George, Peter and Michael and their wives, Janet, Traci and Judy, step-grandsons, Eric, Tyler and Justin.
Bill had a full life of civic and leisure activities. He served as Commander of American Legion, Post 153 of Park Ridge, NJ as well as commanding the American Legion Color Guard, marching in many area parades and competitions, as well as presenting the colors at Shea Stadium. He was a member of various local bowling leagues, Vale Pontiac and American Legion Softball teams serving as a coach and player where he could out hit both his sons. Bill was also a devout long time member of Holy Trinity Church in Hillsdale, NJ serving on the vestry and Church Warden for many years. He was also a member of Holy Spirit Church in Tuckerton, NJ. Bill was probably best known for his devotion to the NY Giants and creating a legacy of family tailgate traditions that morphed into a social tradition looked forward to by many attendees for years. His “shrimp dogs”, Taylor Ham Sandwiches and Filet Mignon Sandwiches will remain legendary. A devoted father and grandfather he never missed a dance recital, attended as many school events, graduations and competitions as he could, their proudest fan.
