

Alex Szendiuch, 86, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2009, after a short illness. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rosa in 1999. Loving father of Alicia, Virginia Krup (Oleh) and Jorge (Maura) and grandfather of Daniel (Tamara) and Peter Krup, John, Nicholas and Luke Szendiuch. He was an active member of the Ukrainian community in Hartford for over four decades and a devoted member of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Alex was born in Sadiv, a village near Lutsk in Ukraine and immigrated with his parents to Argentina in 1925, settling in Chaco, northern Argentina, where there was a large Ukrainian immigrant community. After his marriage to Rosa in 1945, they moved to Buenos Aires and in 1963, came to the U.S. with their three children. Alex had a passion for Ukrainian politics and history and reading - and to the delight of his five grandsons ? cars. He enjoyed a very active retirement which included making preserves, sausages and pickled cucumbers for which he was renowned. With his children he traveled to Argentina, Ukraine and the Czech Republic to visit numerous relatives. Alex had a deep and abiding love for his family and set an example of a rich and fully lived life. He will be missed very much by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a designated charity. A wake will be held at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield on Tuesday, September 22, 5-8 p.m. A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, September 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Church, 110 Russ Street, Hartford.
