She was a lifelong resident of Wethersfield. Constance was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1947 at Wethersfield High School and a graduate of Connecticut College. She received a Master’s Degree from Trinity College.
Constance derived much pleasure from her chosen profession, teacher of Classics. She taught at The Gateway in New Haven, Wethersfield High School and South Windsor High School. After her retirement from teaching in 1989 she served on the Board of Education in Wethersfield for one term.
She was married to Oliver C. Mellen for 60 years with whom she shared academic and professional interests. They loved music and travel and most importantly family. She was a member of First Church of Christ in Wethersfield where she served as deacon as well as on the church board and in several other capacities. She enjoyed travel in the American Southwest and in Europe and made a point of visiting sites pertinent to her classroom work.
Constance is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Brian Murphy of Glastonbury and Elaine and Stephen Carroll of Rockwood, TN along with her three grandchildren, Dana Murphy of Glastonbury, Jamie Carroll and wife Jess of Naperville, IL, Tom Carroll and Taylor Knortz of East Granby, CT and her great grandson Camden Carroll of Naperville. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her brother, William Kelley of Sun City West, AZ.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9th at 11 a.m. at First Church of Christ, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Church of Christ, attention: Music Department, Wethersfield, CT 06109.
