

Dana J. Newell, DDS, 93, of West Hartford, beloved husband for 61 years of Angela (Yacavone) Newell, departed this life to be with the Lord on Sunday (February 1, 2015) with his family by his side. Born in Springfield, MA on January 14, 1922, he was the son of the late John and Mildred (Johnson) Newell. Dana was a 1940 graduate of Bulkeley High School, Hartford. He was a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWII, earning the rank of Sergeant in the Air Wing Division. He worked on aircraft engines while serving in the Asiatic Pacific Area. After the war, on the GI Bill, he attended both Alabama University and later Tufts University in Boston, where he would earn his degree in dentistry. He then opened his private practice on LaSalle St. in West Hartford Center, which he had for many years. Dana was a member of the Hartford Dentist Society and a lifetime member of the Elks. He was also an avid golfer, world traveler and longtime tomato gardener who took great pride in being the first one every season with red tomatoes. In addition to his devoted wife Angela, he leaves to mourn his sister, Edith Buckley of East Longmeadow, MA; sister-in-law, Ellie Newell of Collinsville, and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Jack Newell; sister, Barbara Bonin; brothers-in-law, Arthur “Buddy” Ahl, John Sanzo and John Buckley and sisters-in-law, Marion (Yacavone) Ahl and Lorraine (Yacavone) Sanzo.
Calling hours will be Sunday (February 8) from 2-5 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 5 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. The family invites those attending to share stories about Dana at the service. Burial with military honors will be held at the convenience of the family in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
