Elizabeth Greenwood Metcalf

Born and raised in New York, Betty was a proud graduate of Vassar College. She married the love of her life, Frank Metcalf, in 1953, beginning a marriage grounded in faith, partnership, and unwavering devotion. After teaching English and starting their family in Maryland, Betty and Frank settled in Wethersfield to be closer to their parents as they raised their three daughters. Betty poured herself into her family and community, establishing the library at Charles Wright School alongside her friend Susie Ellis. She believed in providing opportunities to learn and grow.

Her faith shaped the way she lived. A devoted member of the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield for over 65 years, Betty was one of the first female deacons and served wherever needed. She found her greatest calling in Caring Ministries, facilitating the Grief Share Program. Walking alongside families during their hardest days, she spent countless hours visiting church members in the hospital, offering a listening ear, prayer, or simply comfort.

For more than thirty years, Betty called Covenant Living home, where she rekindled her interest in writing, developed new friendships, and worked to improve her community in any way possible. This included ten years on the Resident Council and founding the Low Vision Group. She also enjoyed the Charter Oak Study Club and The Musical Club of Hartford.

Betty was blessed by the compassion and dedication of staff at Covenant Living. Our family is deeply grateful for the care, kindness and love she received.

She remained curious and perceptive, asking questions that encouraged people to look at issues from multiple perspectives and welcoming thoughtful conversations about current events. Those who knew Betty will remember the way she made them feel.

Betty was predeceased by Frank in 2001 and her daughter Margaret (“Peggy”) Carr in 2023 and is survived by her daughters and sons in law Marti and John Bernardi of Rocky Hill, David Carr of Catonsville, MD, and Barbara and Tom Walsh of Glastonbury. She was so proud of her nine grandchildren: Leeanne (Mark) Collura and Katie (Kevin) Kratzer; Patrick (Colleen) Carr, Michael Carr, Kevin (Ashley) Carr, and Karen (Katie) Carr; and Kyle Walsh, Danielle Walsh (Raphael Sarkar), and Erin Walsh; and her 13 great grandchildren: Matthew, Ethan, Maelie, Dominic, Mikayla, Derek, Zachary, Lucas, Daniel, Evan, Natalie, Charlie, and Ian, all of whom will miss their “GG”.

A memorial service celebrating Betty’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First Church of Christ, 250 Main Street, Wethersfield, followed by a reception. There will be no calling hours per Betty’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ, Wethersfield (www.firstchurch.org/give), for either Caring Ministries, Memorial Gifts, or the Steeple Fund.
