Joao Coelho Reis

Joao Coelho Reis, 96, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of the late Sesaltina (Rosario) Reis, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2019. Born in Malhou Alcanena, Portugal on March 8, 1923, he was the son of the late Joao Coelho Reis and Maria (Ascencao) Reis. He served in the Portuguese Army before coming to the United States in 1960 with his family. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Arrow Hart. He was a former member of the Portuguese Club of Newington. Joao loved to play the accordion and he also enjoyed dancing, cooking and gardening. He was an avid fan of the Benfica soccer club in Portugal. More than anything, he was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be forever missed by his two sons, Cecilio Reis of Wethersfield and Jack Reis and wife Adilia of Hartford; two adored grandsons, Steven Reis and wife Karin of New York and Marco Reis and wife Claudia of Hartford and four cherished great-grandchildren, Haley, Katelyn, Logan and Xavier Reis. He is also survived by his sister, Maria Fernandes of Wethersfield and his daughter-in-law, Gloria Reis of Enfield, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was sadly predeceased by two sons, Armindo and Ildefonso Reis and his beloved grandson, Daniel Reis. The family wishes to thank Cecilia, Anita and all the other aides, and special thanks to Vidya for the loving care given to Joao. Funeral services will leave Tuesday (November 5) at 9:15 a.m. from the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Parish (Corpus Christi Church), 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Family and friends may call on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
