Jose M. Chaves

Jose M. Chaves, 87, of Hartford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Evangelina (Freitas) Chaves, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.

Born on August 11, 1938, in the Azores, Portugal, Jose was the son of the late Jose Andrade Chaves and Adelina Chaves. He worked for many years at Aetna and was a proud founding member of the Holy Ghost Portuguese Society. He was also a devoted Portuguese foliāo and shared his heritage by performing for many years at Portuguese festivals, something he truly loved. He took great pride in his garden, but above all, he cherished time spent with his family.

Jose leaves behind his wife Evangelina; his children, John Chaves (Victoria) of Wethersfield, Joe Chaves (Mariana) of Cromwell, and Gina Guerrera (Frank) of Rocky Hill; and his beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Chelsea, Jessica, Joseph, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Madeline, and Frankie. He is also survived by his brother, Artur Chaves (Ines) of Canada, as well as many cherished in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jose was predeceased by his son, Paul Chaves, his sisters, Leonor Braga and Eugenia Chaves, his in-laws, Jose and Emilia Freitas as well as other dear family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 25 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Kane Street, Fatima Square, Hartford. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield.
