Laura (Jacobsen) de Moncada, 62, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on May 26th, 2026 after a brave battle with ALS. She was born October 21st, 1963 in Brooklyn, NY, the beloved only daughter of Harriet and Roy Jacobsen. After living in Brooklyn and Staten Island, her family settled in New Jersey, where she went to high school and college. Laura worked in the insurance industry her entire career and was an invaluable employee and leader at Aetna for over 40 years. She took immense pride in her work and will be greatly missed by her team members.
Laura loved good food, good wine, and good company. She could be found at the beach in Old Saybrook hosting friends and family, teaching those around her how to crack their way through a lobster. Hostess with the most-est best described Laura. She had an appetite for travel, specifically to France, where she enjoyed decadent meals and wine straight from the source. Laura enjoyed baking and will be remembered for her stunningly decorated cookies and cupcakes. She loved all things Disney, making cherished memories with her granddaughter Emmy singing along to Cinderella and Little Mermaid. Laura was also extremely proud of her Norwegian heritage, bringing the family together to make krumkake for the holidays and sharing in other deeply rooted Norwegian traditions.
Laura is survived by the love of her life, her husband Richard Scott de Moncada, whom she met writing her phone number on a check for a bottle of champagne. She passed merely hours before their 38th wedding anniversary. Besides her husband, she leaves behind her pride and joy, her daughter Alexandra (Allie), her son-in-law Bradley Carper, and her granddaughter Emerson. She was predeceased by her parents and her grandson Wesley, whom she will hold on to tightly in Heaven.
Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to Bill Pilkington and Karen Carney for their support in navigating Laura’s end of life, and to Shernet, her nurse’s assistant who provided her with safe care and comfort.
Laura’s family will celebrate her life with calling hours Tuesday, June 9th from 4-7 p.m. and a service Wednesday, June 10th from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., both at D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd, Wethersfield, CT 06109. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Laura’s name to ALS United CT, or in the form of books for her grandson Wesley’s Little Library, which will be collected at the service.
