Michael "Mike" J. Nearing

Michael “Mike” John Nearing, 74, of Cromwell, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford on June 22, 1951, he was the son of the late John and Dorothy (Howard) Nearing and lived in the area all his life. Mike graduated from Conard High School in West Hartford in 1970, then served proudly in the CT Air National Guard, and began his career working full time with them as a security policeman. He continued his career working for First Security as a security supervisor at St. Francis Hospital, then worked as a corporate security administrator for Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield of CT, and next as an account executive for ACP Engineering Inc, a security integration company. He finished his distinguished career as a safety and security officer with the statewide security unit for the State of CT Department of Administrative Services, retiring in 2017. Above and beyond his full-time work, Mike was most proud to have spent 52 years as part of the CT State Police Auxiliary Unit, Troop H, serving from 1972-2025. After retirement, Mike enjoyed volunteering at the Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown. Mike was also very active in his community, Foxwood Meadows in Cromwell. He enjoyed his cars, jet skiing, and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all, Mike was very devoted to his family and loved vacationing, traveling and visiting with them.

A loving son, brother, uncle and great-uncle, Mike will be forever missed by his sister, Deborah McDaniel of Myrtle Beach, SC; his nephew, Jonathan McDaniel and wife Sarah of Waltham, MA; his niece Brenda Stoltzfus and husband Jared of Myrtle Beach, SC; his great nephew Eli and great-nieces, Cora, Maizey, and Zoey. He is also survived by many extended family members, brothers in blue, and lifelong friends. In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by his brother-in law and friend, Roger McDaniel, Jr.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects, at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd, Wethersfield, Saturday May 30, 2026 from 11am to 1pm. A memorial service will be held in the chapel beginning at 1pm. Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to CT State Police Museum (P.O. Box 1945, Meriden, CT, 06450-0899) or to Amazing Grace Food Pantry (16 Stack St., Middleton, CT, 06457).
