He was born in Hartford, and was raised by his parents Vera and Francis Cultrera of Hartford, CT. Bob was a proud family man and dedicated his life as a loving husband of 58 years to Eileen Scandura and father to his two sons Bobby and John.
Bob was a dedicated and decorated Hartford Fireman for 35 years in which 15 of those years he was a proud Deputy Chief Driver’s Aide. Bob loved being a fireman and received medals of valor for his heroic efforts at saving lives and fighting fires. One example was when a small boy was trapped inside a burning home and, with total disregard for his own safety, Bob courageously ran into the home without wearing his life-saving air-pack and found the boy who was unresponsive. Bob carried the boy out of the house and immediately administered CPR, which ultimately saved the boy’s life. Bob was also proud of the fact that he knew the secret code for activating Life-Star during a life-threatening emergency. Bob was a life-long communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Wethersfield where he enjoyed passing the collection basket. Bob loved spending his summers with his family in Niantic at the beach-house and cherished going out to dinner, taking walks to the beach and visiting his brother Jack. Bob was an avid coin collector and organized an extensive collection of rare coins. He was a New York Yankees and New York Giants fan and not a day went by without reading his Daily News. Bob also maintained a dedicated commitment to cutting his lawn and if that wasn’t enough he would also continue on and cut the neighbor’s lawn without being asked.
Bob leaves behind his two sons and daughters-in-law Robert, Jr. and Dr. Nailia Scandura of Glastonbury and John and Mari-Jo Scandura of Wethersfield. He was known and loved being “Poppy” to his beloved grandchildren Gianna and Isabella Scandura and Jackson and Jillian Scandura. He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law Jack and Donna Cultrera of Niantic and his favorite niece Cari (Cultrera) Piper and her husband Roger Piper of Wethersfield. He was predeceased by his father, Dominic Scandura.
The Scandura Family would like to thank the staff at the DaVita Dialysis Center in Rocky Hill, CT for the tender and patient care they provided.
