

Salvatore ""Sal"" Sebastiano Longo, 80 of Rocky Hill passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25 at Mapleview Manor in Rocky Hill. Born on July 3, 1934 in Belvedere Province of Siracusa, Sicily, Italy he was the son of the late Paolo and Gaetana (Mancarella) Longo. Sal proudly served in the Italian Police - Guardia di Finanza in Italy and was stationed in Rome, Italy and the Italian Alps for over 5 years. He met his beloved wife Lydia (Scalora) in Sicily and they married in 1960. Together they came to the United States in 1961 and settled in Hartford. Sal's first job was at Connecticut Springs Factory in Farmington. Sal also became a skilled mason and stoneworker. He loved to work with his hands and this talent allowed him to create beautiful stone structures. He then worked at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield for over 32 years and retired in 1998. Sal and Lydia moved to Rocky Hill where they settled and raised their children. Sal was a member of the Rocky Hill/Wethersfield Elks #2308. He was also a member of the Italian American Stars Men's Club in Harford. Sal was truly blessed with a ""green thumb"" and put his heart and soul into his beautiful fruit trees and vegetable gardens. He was so full of pride and joy to share his abundant harvest every season with family, friends and neighbors. Sal learned to play the accordion at the age of 17 and he loved to entertain his family and friends with his ""beautiful music"". In addition to his beloved wife Lydia, Sal is survived by his loving children, Paul Longo and his wife Heidi of Salem, MA, Steven Longo and his wife Theresa of Rocky Hill, Tina Signorello and her husband Marco of
Rocky Hill, and Josina Demers and her husband Elmer of Wethersfield. ""Nonno"" Sal will be sadly missed by his precious grandchildren Steven and Marissa Gulioso of Wethersfield, Rachel, Katelyn and Alyssa Longo of Rocky Hill, Salvatore and Adriana Signorello of Rocky Hill. Sal leaves a sister, Nancy Scalora of East Windsor, a brother-in-law Salvatore Scalora of Willimantic, sisters-in-law Maria Scalora of Newington, Angela Scalora of New Britain and Maria Scalora of Wethersfield, brother-in-law Ben Scalora and his wife Vinny of Tampa, FL and several adoring nieces and nephews. Sal's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful and supportive staff at Mapleview Manor for the care and compassion given to Sal during his time there.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday from the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday (January 31) at 12:00pm at St. James Church, 767 Elm Street, Rocky Hill. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
