Sebastian James Sbalcio, 78, of Rocky Hill, beloved husband for 52 years of Lois (Rafala) Sbalcio, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, June 4, 2026. Born in Hartford on March 11, 1948, he was the son of the late Joseph and Carmela (Bombanti) Sbalcio. Sebastian graduated from Rocky Hill High School before earning an Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor’s Degree from New England College. A patriot at heart, he served proudly as a Specialist 5 in the U.S. Army National Guard Helicopter Unit. Sebastian worked for the State of CT Department of Transportation as Principal Engineer of Consultant Design for 38 years, retiring in 2009. He then joined GM2 Associates, Inc. for 11 years as a Director of Project Development.
A quiet and humble man, Sebastian cherished time with family and friends. He was happiest golfing and gardening, visiting museums, attending musical performances and reading good books. Sebastian’s strong work ethic was widely respected, along with his professional expertise and leadership skills. He was privately frugal so that he could be generous with his family and those less fortunate. Knowing Sebastian meant being blessed with intelligent conversation, a helping hand, open heart, and an adorable smile that lit up his face. He possessed a sharp wit that he enjoyed occasionally teasing his loving cousins with during the many Bombanti and Sbalcio family gatherings. Sebastian made lifetime friends from high school, college and work, all of whom enjoyed golfing together. He considered these friendships to be a blessing that gave him tremendous comfort and joy.
A loving husband and father, Sebastian will be forever missed by his devoted wife Lois and his wonderful children; daughter Stephanie Polzella and husband Damon of Glastonbury and son Matthew Sbalcio and wife Nicole of Rocky Hill. He is also survived by his in-law siblings, Carol (Rafala) and Michael Peluso, and Carl Rafala and Sue (Krupenevich) Rafala; extended Polzella and Sisson family members, as well as many treasured cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends of years long duration, especially chosen family members of the heart, Robert Alekson, Fred and Joyce Schwartz and Lew and Emmy Vasquez.
Calling hours will be Sunday, June 14 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. with a Prayer Service scheduled from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield.
