Sergeant Leonard A. ""Lenny"" Kulas, RHPD, 49, of Cromwell died Thursday (April 28, 2011). He was born December 22, 1961 in Hartford and was the beloved son of Sandra Lee (Barnard) Kulas of Rocky Hill and the late Leonard D. Kulas. He lived in Rocky Hill prior to moving to Cromwell several years ago. Lenny was a police officer in the town of Rocky Hill for the past 31 years. He began his career in law enforcement as a Police Explorer at age 14. He became a dispatcher for the department, June 23, 1980. He became a Supernumerary, April 2, 1982 and was sworn in as a police officer, January of 1983. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, December 23, 1993. Lenny served in many capacities on the police force: he was a commanding officer of the Marine Patrol as well as the Police Explorers, a member of the Quad Unit, K-9 Unit, Honor Guard and also served as a Field Training Officer. He graduated with honors from Middlesex Community College with an associate's degree in Criminal Justice. In his years with the police department, he received eight Letters of Recommendation, 10 Letters of Commendation, was selected as Officer of the Month in March of 1983 and received two Meritorious Service Commendations as well as a Distinguished Service Commendation. Years ago, he redesigned the RHPD uniform patch that is still worn by officers today. Lenny was a master carpenter, avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, enjoyed a variety of activities, such as UConn Basketball, going out to dinner, reading, going to the movies and spending time at the beach. Lenny was a generous and kind person always giving to others, he will be dearly missed by his loving family and many friends. Besides his cherished mother Sandy of Rocky Hill, Lenny is survived by his fiancé, Laura Pandolfo of Rocky Hill; a sister, Lori Ann Kulas of Middletown; his godfather, Robert Kulas and his wife Joan; cousins, Gary Kulas and his wife Eleanor, Mark Kulas and his wife Kelly, Officer Wayne Kulas and his wife Alison all of Windsor Locks, Pamela Esche and husband, Kurt of MA. and special family friends the Berube Family. Lenny also leaves many dear and close friends, especially Officer Richard Degen, RHPD, Detective Roy Bombacci, RHPD, Officer Thomas Soudier, Capitol Police and Sgt. Joseph Vernali, RHPD. Lenny also leaves behind ""his little guys"", dogs, Bandit and Tyke. He was predeceased by his brother, Michael Kulas, his grandmother, Del Dellapi and his aunt and uncle, Emma and Bernard Dovin. Funeral service will be Tuesday (May 3) at 8:15 a.m. from the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Church, 767 Elm Street, Rocky Hill.
