
Sybil Ward Smith, 92, died peacefully Sunday (February 27, 2011) with her husband of 67 years, Richard Gillett Smith at her side. Sybil, only child of Asline and Doris Ward, was born in Boston, MA, April 19, 1918. She grew up in Bristol, CT. and Wellesley, MA. After graduating from Connecticut College in 1941, with a major in child psychology, she taught at Waynflete School in Portland Maine. Sybil married Richard on Sept. 9, 1943 at her parents' home in Wellesley, MA. Sybil is survived by her daughter, Sybil Gillett Smith of Boulder, CO and Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas, her son Peter Ward Smith and wife Delinda Currier Smith of Carrabassett Valley, ME, and their son Peter Currier Smith, a student at St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY. She was predeceased by her daughter, Martha Smith Fazzano who died in 2000. Sybil was an avid skier, a sailor and tennis player as well as an accomplished watercolorist. She was a longtime resident of Glastonbury and spent the last ten years of her life as a resident at Seabury Retirement Community in Bloomfield, CT.
