Thomas M. Doyle, affectionately known as “Tom,” 85, of Wethersfield, CT, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 18, 2026, at Hartford Hospital after a valiant and unrelenting struggle with a series of medical issues.
He was born on October 12, 1940, in Pittsfield, MA, the son of James E. and Rita (Raftery) Doyle. He earned a BSEE from the University of Massachusetts – School of Engineering in 1963 and an MBA from the University of Connecticut – School of Business in 1969.
He worked as an engineer and later as a purchasing manager for 34 years, first at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, CT, and then at International Fuel Cells in South Windsor, CT, retiring early. After this experience, he worked for several years as a purchasing agent for the U.S. Repeating Arms Company in New Haven, CT, before retiring fully.
Tom had a strong faith and was deeply religious. His Catholic faith guided him to live a moral life marked by care and love for others, especially his wife, children, and grandchildren.
While he and his wife lived in Waterford, CT, he was an active member and eucharistic minister at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Waterford, CT, and a third-degree knight with the Seaside Council 17 of the Knights of Columbus. In retirement, he also volunteered with many civic organizations, including the Friends of Harkness, the American Red Cross, the Garde Arts Center, and the Shriners Hospital “Tabs for Tots” program. While living in Wethersfield for nearly 50 years, he was an active member of the men’s club and a CCD instructor at the Church of the Incarnation (now Christ the King parish). He also spent many years in leadership roles with the Boys and Cub Scout programs and the YMCA Indian Guides program in Wethersfield. He was instrumental in mentoring all three of his sons to the rank of Eagle Scout – an organization for which he had profound respect.
Coming from an upbringing etched in poverty and hardship, Tom rose above his circumstances and instilled in his children the value of hard work, tenacity, and the importance of education – an influence that is reflected today in the successes of both his children and his grandchildren.
Everything Tom did throughout his life reflected his personal integrity and strength of character and was infused with his unique sense of humor and his love for his family and life. He relished every opportunity to meet and talk with people, sharing heartwarming stories and insightful historical perspectives in every interaction.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Theresa (Battaini), with whom he would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on August 21st.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Anne Doyle Pratt of Worcester, MA; and three sons, Mark (Melissa) of Wethersfield, CT; Steven (Jennifer) of Newtown, CT; and Michael of Old Mystic, CT.
He also leaves eight adoring, beautiful grandchildren – Sean and Danielle Pratt; Matthew, Megan, and Molly Doyle; and Gavin, Kaitlyn, and Aiden Doyle. He was predeceased by both his parents, James and Rita Doyle, and by all five of his siblings – his three sisters, Susan Petrini Calhoun, Sheila Marino Hacker, and Linda McGinnis, as well as his brothers, James E. Doyle, III, and John A. Doyle.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 28th, 2026, from 5-7 pm at D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd, Wethersfield, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Christ the King Parish, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield, on Saturday, August 29th, at 10 AM.
