Harvey was the eldest son of the late Annabelle (Browne) and Harvey F. Ellingson. He is survived by his wife, Alice; sons David and wife Michelle of Weyers Cave, VA, Joseph and wife Rebecca of Rockingham, VA, and Samuel of Harrisonburg, VA; and loving grandchildren Caitlin, Riley, Logan, Gracen, Liam, and Graham.
Growing up in a Navy family, Harvey moved to Maryland before eventually settling in Norfolk, VA where he spent much of his childhood. He attended James Madison University and met Alice while taking a drafting class at Massanutten Technical in January 1976. They soon married, raised a family, and made a home in Keezletown, VA.
Harvey had an inquisitive mind and creative approach to problem solving. He was a drafting and design engineer for over 25 years before retiring to enjoy life with his family and grandchildren. He was a fiercely loyal friend, loving husband, and an extremely proud father and grandfather. While a transplant to the area, Harvey loved the Valley and made it his home.
Harvey had many talents, interests, and pastimes. When his children were younger he was involved in the Boy Scouts, and he and Alice shared their love of camping with their children, grandchildren, and many friends over the years. He also enjoyed gardening daylilies and irises with Alice and was a member of the Charlottesville Daylily Club. Harvey loved sharing many interests with his sons: target practice, working on automobiles, and welding with David; sawmilling, carpentry, and cutting trees with Joseph; and coaching Samuel’s soccer team, bicycling and canoeing with him, and sharing their mutual love of animals with their family pets.
The family will receive friends 12:30-1:30 pm, Friday, September 29, 2023 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm at Keezletown Cemetery with Pastor Terri Luzynski officiating.
