

Jeanette "Janet" McMullan Shumake of Lake Placid, Florida, passed into the heavenly church on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. She was born on January 29, 1918, in Brunswick, Maryland, the only child of Bertrand and Maggie Reed McMullan. She was reared in Mt. Sidney, Virginia, attended Shenandoah College in Dayton, Virginia and graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
She and her husband, Octer, owned and operated grocery and clothing storesin Mount Sidney and Shenandoah, Virginia, and she later returned to teaching in Page and Augusta counties. At the Verona school, she taught fourth grade for 17 years before retiring. She and her husband traveled around the country, living in Navarre, Ohio, Springfield, Virginia, Staunton, Virginia, and Clermont, Florida, and at age 82, finally settled in Lake Placid, Florida. Her church affiliation was with Memorial United Methodist Church in Lake Placid, where she taught ladies Bible class for several years.
After her husband, Octer died in 2004 and her daughter, Donna Harman, in 2005, she moved to the Palms Estates in Lorida, Florida, until her health brought her to Rosewood Senior Care and to Southern Lifestyle Assisted Living in Lake Placid.
She is survived by her daughter, Agatha Johnson and her husband, Harry of Lorida, Florida; four grandchildren, Brian Harman and Barbara McKaskle of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Stephanie Harman of South Carolina and Edward (Susan) Pratt, of Fairfax, Virginia; six great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters and a great-great-grandson; cousins, Colleen Long and Winifred Foley of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and sister-in-law, Alleen Shumake, of Staunton, Virginia.
Friends and family will gather from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave, Virginia. Graveside service and burial wil be on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, in Mount Sidney, Virginia. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in Mount Sidney, Virginia, with the Revs. John Crawford, David Pratt and Drema McAllister-Wilson officiating.
