

She was born in Rockingham County on December 12, 1929 and was the daughter of the late James Hopkins Walker and Annabelle Sellers Root Walker.
Bette was a lifelong resident of New Hope and was raised in Rockingham County. She graduated from Port Republic High School and attended Madison College (now JMU). She was a homemaker and a member of New Covenant Community Church in Weyers Cave.
On October 25, 1946 she married Charles William “Bill” Garber who preceded her in death on September 19, 2001. She was also preceded in death by a son Charles William Garber, Jr. and two sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Robert E. Garber and wife, Liz, of Madison, Samuel W. Garber and wife, Barbara, of Barboursville; three daughters, Sara G. Ayres and husband, Hunter “Chipper”, of Lexington, Christine A. Brinley of Athens, GA, and Rebecca G. Johnson and husband, Bob, of Harrisonburg; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one brother, James H. Walker, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave with Pastor Jim Logan. Private burial will be held earlier at Middle River Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
