
Robert was born in Weyers Cave on April 5, 1936 to Robert Franklin and Mollie Herring Smallwood.
He was employed as a tractor trailer driver for Contee Sand and Gravel Co. and F.O. Day in Maryland. Later, he was a self-employed dump truck operator. After retiring he was President and Owner of a construction firm. After moving to Virginia in 1992, he worked part time for Houff Transfer. He was a member of the Elks and Moose lodge in Laurel, Md.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Althea Jones Smallwood; three daughters, Elaine Mauri and husband, Jerry, Darlene Smallwood, and Dona Smallwood-Carneal; three grandchildren, Danielle Smallwood, Larry and RJ Carneal; two great-grandchildren, Chance Diaz and Jacob Bartley; one sister, Marie Roadcap; many cousins whom were like his brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Following his request, he will be cremated and his memorial service will be private.
