Imogene Schexnayder Carmouche Berthelot

Imogene Lydia age 98 died peacefully at the home of her daughter on February 11, 2018. She was born in Lauderdale, Louisiana and spent the majority of her life in White Castle, Louisiana. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Carmouche Gambel (Raymond, deceased); and son, Leo Carmouche, III (Kornelia); her grandchildren: Lydia Gambel Jaunet; LCDR Raymond Halpin Gambel, Jr., USN (Kristin) and David Charles Gambel (Kimberly); Christopher Sven Carmouche (Mallory); her great-grandchildren, Michael, Christian and Madison Jaunet; Bryan, Alyssa, and Kyle Gambel; Amelia Gambel and Eloise Carmouche. She is also survived by her sister Mildred Schexnayder Orr, and sister-in-law, Juanita Chauvin Schexnayder, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 49 years, Leo Charles Carmouche, Jr., and her second husband, Richard Berthelot, her parents, Camille and Grace Pollock Schexnayder, brothers, Thomas (Marilyn) and Edmond Schexnayder, sisters, Jeanne LeBlanc (Charles, Sr.), Camille Bartlett (John), Grace Gough (Richard), and Barbara Hyde (Stanley). She was a graduate of Ascension Catholic High School and in 1939 received her teaching certificate from Ursuline College. Her teaching career spanned 47 years spending the first 13 years teaching in public schools in Plaquemines and Iberville parishes. In 1952 she began the first Kindergarten program at Our Lady of Prompt Succor School in White Castle where she remained as teacher and later principal until retirement in 1986. She spent her retirement participating in various programs learning more about her faith and sharing that faith with others. She visited the sick and served as a Minister of the Eucharist at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church. Reading, visiting with family and friends and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow brought her much pleasure. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Friday, February, 16, 2018 at 12 noon at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, 32615 Bowie Street, White Castle, Louisiana, with visitation beginning at 10 am. Entombment in White Castle Mausoleum will immediately follow Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church 105 Bonnabel Blvd., Metairie, LA 70005; Christ the King Church, 210 E. 24th Ave. Belton TX 76513, Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, P.O. Box 249, White Castle, LA 70788 or to Bishop Maurice Schexnayder’s Seminary Fund, 1408 Carmel Drive, Lafayette, LA 70501 (attention Vocation Office).
