Carmen Joseph Nini, 85, of Whiting, N.J., passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2025. He was born on May 1, 1939, in Princeton, N.J. He was a great husband, father, “Pop-Pop” and a good friend. He will be missed by all.
Carmen was the beloved husband of Barbara A. Nini for 63 years, who passed away in 2023. Together they raised two children (Joseph and Elaine) in Robbinsville, N.J. before moving to Florida for 22 years in Pompano Beach and the Villages. They returned home to Whiting, N.J. in 2012, where he has been living for the past 13 years. He and Barbara loved to travel and together they went on 31 cruises. Their greatest joy was spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Carmen attended the Princeton school system. As a young child, his grandfather introduced him to Albert Einstein, who was a friend of the family and lived nearby. After graduating from Princeton High School, he served in the U.S. Navy. He then worked for U.S. Steel, where he retired after 30 years of employment. After retirement, he went to work for his good friend Joe Scharibone, of Jo-Jo’s Tavern in Mercerville, N.J. for 11 years.
Carmen was a member of the Robbinsville Recreation Committee and coached his son in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was instrumental in helping build the first Little League field (Tantum Park) in Robbinsville, N.J.
He was an avid golfer and started to play at the age of 13 at Springdale Country Club in Princeton. Over the years he perfected his golf game and was a member of the Skyview Country Club in Robbinsville, Old York Country Club in Bordentown, N.J. and several golf courses in Florida. He won many golf tournaments and hit several hole in ones. He was a lifelong Dodgers fan (both in Brooklyn and Los Angeles) and a New York Giants football fan.
Carmen is predeceased by his parents Carmen J. Sr. and Catherine Nini. He is survived by his two children: son Joseph Nini and his wife Barbara, and daughter Elaine and her husband Dennis Edinger. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Peter Danese and his wife Shelly, Katie Kohlmayer and her husband George, Melissa Michael and her husband Matthew, and Michael Edinger and his wife Rebecca. He is also survived by his great grandchildren: Emma, Charlotte, Alice, Madelyn, Lily, Josie, Livia, Evelyn, Hudson and (coming soon) Declan.
