Whiting, NJ- Reverend Donald Henry Krautter died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick, NJ following nearly two years of illness. He was 80. At the time of his death, Reverend Donald (Deacon Don) Krautter, of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, resided in Whiting, NJ.
Born in Newark, NJ on January 31, 1932 he was the son of Henry and Mabel M. Krautter and brother of Virginia Krautter Messer, all who have since passed. He was married to his loving wife, Nancy Lange Krautter on April 9, 1960 in Short Hills, NJ. Don and Nancy were married for 38 years before his wife passed away in 1998 from terminal brain cancer.
Don was a 1950 graduate of Milburn High School where he played football and served as team manager for both the men’s basketball and baseball teams. During his youth in Milburn, NJ he attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte, crucifer and lay reader. Upon graduation from Milburn High School Don assisted his father in his title searching business and attended Rutgers University at night. In 1952 he was drafted into the US Army and served his country from June 11, 1952 until August 1954. During that time he was sent to Korea where he fought in the Korean War as a radio operator with C Battery of the First Field Artillery Observation Battalion. Upon returning from the service he entered Upsala College full time under the G.I. Bill. He graduated from Upsala College with honors in June 1957 with a degree in business administration.
His accomplished business career started with two years of selling real estate followed by ten years with Kislak Mortgage Corp. In 1969 Don began a 15 year career with Irving Trust Company in New York City where he held the position of chief appraiser and then as Senior Vice President/Lending Officer and Assistant Manager of the Real Estate/Construction Lending Department. After a brief move to First Fidelity Bank in Newark, NJ he ended his professional career in 1996 at Chase Manhattan Bank as Senior Vice President/Middle Market Real Estate.
For over forty years, Don and his family resided in New Providence, NJ. During this time the entire family were members of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Don was a leader of St. Andrew’s serving as: lay reader, usher, counter, chalice bearer, lay eucharistic minister, vestry member (two terms), Junior Warden (two terms) and Senior Warden (two terms). He also served on the church’s outreach committee for many years. In 2000 he led the Capital Fund Drive for St. Andrew’s that was the most successful in its history. His service to the community of New Providence included holding the position of Vice President of the New Providence Community Service Association for many years and chairing the New Providence Zoning Board form more than twenty years.
Don entered the Diocesan Formation Program for Deacons in the Diocese of New Jersey, Episcopal Church of Trenton in the fall of 2001. He completed his program after more than three years and was ordained on June 11, 2005. Since that time he has served as the Deacon for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Whiting, NJ.
Deacon Don is survived by his three daughters Katherine K. Bullock, wife of Gregory A. Bullock, of New Egypt, NJ, Carolyn L. Wight of Brick, NJ and Elizabeth C. Glasgow, wife of Kyle Glasgow, of Greensboro, NC. He also leaves behind his loving grandchildren: Kim Wight, KC Wight, Kamryn Wight, Harry Wight, Jr., Jake Glasgow, Nick Glasgow, Liv Glasgow and Brydon Bullock.
A celebration of the life of Reverend Donald H. Krautter will take place at 10:00am on June 27, 2012 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Whiting, NJ. A reception with the family follows immediately after the service in the parish hall. A private burial will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Memorial Garden (New Providence) later that day.
