My Mom was the most loving presence in my life.   She was a true woman warrior.  Even when when her speech allowed for  only an occasional word, she replied, “Absolutely," when asked if she wanted to continue living! Mom  told me that I opened her world but she was the one who planted a love for living in me. She was an artist to the core & lived with the frustration of never being able to go to art school.  Her artwork highlighted every detail of her subjects.  Her home was a work of art, as were her friendships &  love of family.  She adored little children. They all felt it, gravitating towards her no matter her age or infirmity.  Edie was a progressive & feminist.   She embodied the essence of Love is Love before it became a popular phrase. There was no human being that was not welcomed or respected in her world.  When she lived in Germany while my Dad was in the army, the family she lived with sought  permission from the Pope to make to make her the godmother of their granddaughter.  The night that Hillary Clinton was scheduled to debate, she broke her hip. & refused to allow my Dad to call an ambulance.  She had to see a female nominee for president debate!  She used to joke that the umbilical cord was never fully cut, it was very long so that I could find my own way in the world.  She was always there waiting in the wings, cheering me on, comforting me, putting things in perspective.   My parents were devoted to each other for 70 years.  Mom was candid  about how challenging a marriage could be & often joked that she deserved a medal of honor, but she loved him deeply, doing everything in her power to care for him.  The loss of my Mom leaves a massive hole in my life.  Its been a long journey of complicated grief, as I watched dementia progress, but it has been an honor to to be by her side every step of the way.  I can only pray that I made the quality of her life a fraction as rich as she made mine & that she felt & feels my love every day that I breathe.

Edie loved stories. She and Myer used to read to each other at home.  When she first arrived at Greenwood House, Lori and Edie spent hours reading together. They read all of Kristen Hannah’s novels and everything Maya Angelou wrote. As the years went by they transitioned to shorter stories that were easier for Edie to follow.  Edie loved rhymes so Janine sent her a collection of Dr Seuss stories. Her favorite by far was Green Eggs And Ham.  When the grumpy guy says I”would not eat them here or there he would not eat them Anywhere”,she would often join in strongly on the last word. Maybe I’m mistaken but I’m pretty sure it was the last word she spoke as I read to her.  Rest in peace, Mom, I hope you have lots of great books to read in the Afterlife.

I'm Helena, and Edie was my beloved aunt. I always felt so comfortable, loved, and accepted when our family would visit Edie, Meyer, and Lori in their Valley Stream home. Several times I got to stay with them as a child, all by myself. Aunt Edie always made sure that I was happy and entertained while I was there, and I especially enjoyed those special visits.  
Edie's values of caring, acceptance of others, generosity, and loving affection live on in her daughter Lori. Aunt Edie will always live on in my heart.

Edie was my theatre mom for many years.  It started after I met Lori and Michael and they started attending the shows I was in.  As time progressed there was a lovely entourage that grew over time where we would meet for dinner or lunch nearby and enjoy each other’s company, talk about the show and the production and life.  This is where Edie and I connected.  As artists talking about the creative process and the life of an artist.  When she first started to come to the shows she was on the arm of her beloved husband and she could come to an evening show.  Eventually she would come to a matinee on a cane, then a walker and then we had to make sure she had wheelchair access and was situated in the back of the theatre to enjoy the show.  Then eventually those days were no more and her husband passed and she began her journey into her senior years.  I looked on her all those years  as my theatre Mom because my folks had passed and it made me happy that she would make the effort to come to a show and I would get some of her fabulous Mom energy as well as a wonderful visit with her.  One of my favorite moments with her was her 90th birthday party when she was the queen wearing her crown, overseeing all her friends and favorite artists celebrating her and her wonderful life.  She will be missed very much.

Kindness, curiosity, joy, and love are what come to mind when I think of Edie, what  I always felt when I was around her, and what I will hold with me. I feel so lucky to have had her in my life.

This is Lynda, Edie’s niece, her sister Evelyn’s daughter, and Helena’s sister.

My Aunt Edie’s life was a testament to her beautiful soul and loving heart.  She showed me this beauty and love expressing themselves through her relationships with everyone who had the blessing of being close to her.  Edie’s soul and heart are expressed through the beauty and love evident in her amazing paintings.

My Aunt Edie’s caring, empathy and compassion were demonstrated over the 67 years I had the gift of knowing her.  I’m so grateful for her lovingkindness, humility, honesty, acceptance, respect, and deep understanding.

Lori, you were consistently a profoundly loving and devoted daughter dedicated to doing everything possible to bring joy, delight, optimal health and comfort to your Mom.

It is comforting to know that Edie’s virtues live on in this world not only through our memories but also through my cousin Lori, who exemplifies her Mom’s wonderful attributes.

While I will miss Aunt Edie’s presence in this world, I feel her with me as a warm place in my heart

Edie and the Schlossers have been a part of my life since childhood. I have so many wonderful memories of visiting 203 Ash St often and ofcourse the love and the warmth we were always shown. My late mother, Sheila, always referred to Edie as her sister and she loved her deeply and cherished their friendship. Our condolences and love to all.

My Aunt Edie was a breath of fresh air during my own childhood.   Uncle Meyer was my mother's middle brother and their generation and that of my grandparents, though filled with many wonderful characters,  could never be characterized as well educated, well travelled, cultured or erudite.   Aunt Edie of course was all of that and thus so different from the world I was mostly surrounded by.   My mom, Bella was close to Meyer as I was growing up and some of my best memories of early childhood through to my teenage years were the frequent weekend trips from Brooklyn to Valley Stream.   There was my beautiful cousin Lori to play with, Uncle Meyer would tell stories and many bad jokes and my Aunt Edie would cook up a great storm,  surrounded by her paintings and speaking with an intelligence about current events, music, literature and theatre that I only heard from my teachers at school.  As I headed into my teens,  the nature of my visits to Valley Stream changed.  Instead of hanging out mainly with Lori and my Uncle, I started gravitating more to the kitchen for long talks with Aunt Edie about books, movies, plays and what was going on in the world.   What stands out most in my memories though is how she spoke with me when I was making decisions about which high school and later which university to attend.  It wasn't easy talking about this stuff with my parents.  As most Jewish parents in those times, mine were focused very much on their own vision of me staying close to home and becoming a professional -- in my case a lawyer since I had littel talent for math or science.   In contrast, Aunt Edie drilled down to what studies and career that I myself might want to pursue.  In that kitchen she helped me analyze school choices by what each might offer to send me on my own pathway.  For that I am always grateful to her.  She was a one of a kind human being who could quickly get to the heart of what you were all about and find a way to contribute to your growth.

My first memory of meeting Ms. Ida was when I was very pregnant with my son Daniel. Lori and I were at a conference and her parents met us at the Taj Mahal. She was so attentive and kind to me. She used to say that Lori and I were like the "Rug Rats," and I once heard her refer to me in talking to Lori, she said, it's "your sweetheart." I was always blown away by her talent as an artist. Her artwork had messages, of love, of family, and had amazing detail! And she gave me Lori!

I was a newcomer to the family in 1964 when I was dating Edie's nephew Ira. Edie was such a giving soul and welcomed me with open arms. I will treasure that memory and the many times, thanks to Lori, that we could visit at one of several birthday parties. I loved hearing the stories of her life and treasured her interest in me as well.
You will be missed so very much, but as many have said, never forgotten.

My name is Ira Diamond and I am Edie’s nephew.  I was born during WW II and my Mom (Faye, Edie’s sister) lived with her parents and sisters.  Edie and Evie (the sisters) were my babysitters during those years.  While I have no true recollections of that time, I remember Edie and Evie telling all those stories about my babyhood that always embarrassed me.

My first unforgettable memory was when I was in 7th grade and had to make an historical diorama.  My Mom said I should talk to Edie since she was the artist in the family.  I did and she ‘helped’ me design and construct the diorama.  Basically, she did most of the work and I helped.  When I turned in the project to my teacher, she knew it was not totally my doing.  I explained and was told to do my project over again, by myself.  Edie’s diorama, with proper attribution, was put on display for the rest of that school year.

My other vivid memory was when I was in college.  My girlfriend, Linda, now my wife of almost 58 years, and I were in summer school and also working Sundays at a donut and sandwich shop.  At that time Meyer (Edie’s husband) was driving a NYC taxi and working many nights.  Linda and I got done with work at about Midnight.  We knew Edie stayed up late and we took a box of donuts and went to her house.  We had amazing conversations and enjoyed each other’s company.  We discussed anything and everything and always left the house feeling wonderful.

Edie was a very positive constant in my life and I will always keep her memory in my heart.  It makes me very sad that my health will prevent me from attending her funeral and entombment.

With all my love I say goodbye but by no means forgotten.

Edie was so kind and welcoming. She always gave great advice and never judged anyone. She was always trying to help even when she wasn't in the best shape herself.  We always shared good laughs in private. When Edie was no longer to communicate verbally we still communicated through facial expressions. Whenever I walked in the room her face always lit up. That always made my day.

What a cherished legacy Edie leaves with her beautiful artwork and loving spirit. It is an honor and privilege to have known her.

To love someone long-term is to attend a thousand funerals of the people they used to be. 
The people they are too tired to be any longer.
The people they don’t recognize inside themselves anymore.
The people they grew out of, the people they never ended up growing in to.
We so badly want the people we love to get their spark back when it burns out, to become speedily found when they are lost.
But it is not our job to hold anyone accountable to the people they used to be.
It is our job to travel with them between each version and to honor what emerges along the way.
Sometimes it will be an even more luminescent flame.
Sometimes it will be a flicker that disappears and temporarily floods the room with a perfect and necessary darkness.
