Ida “Edie” Schlosser, 94, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023 in Ewing, NJ. Born to William and Sonia Rabinovitch in Montreal, Canada, she and her sisters, Evelyn and Faye, grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Edie was a beloved mother to Lori Robin Schlosser, an adoring aunt, great aunt and great grand aunt, a jubilant great grandmother and a truly loyal friend.
Edie married Meyer Schlosser in 1948, moved to Valley Stream, New York where they raised Lori and then to Whiting, New Jersey, where they retired to Crestwood Village. Edie and Meyer were married and extremely devoted to each other for almost 70 years when Meyer passed away in September of 2017.
Edie and her friend Adeline owned and operated a card and gift shop, Quaint and Fancy, in Bellmore, NY for several years, but Edie ‘s greatest passion was her art. Her artwork highlighted every beautiful detail of every subject she captured. Her home was a work of art, as well as her friendships and her love for family. Edie had friends all over the world that lasted a lifetime. She had a particularly soft spot for little children and loved spending time with them or even just looking at them. She was jubilant when she was in their presence and they all felt it, gravitating towards her no matter her age or infirmity.
Edie was way ahead of her time. She embodied the essence of Love is Love before it became a popular phrase. There was no human being that was not welcomed or respected in her world. Edie lived in Germany when Meyer was stationed there in the service and she was loved so much that the family that housed them applied for special permission from the Pope to make her the godmother of their granddaughter. She maintained childhood friendships in Canada and spend almost every summer visiting. Her home was filled with people from all over the globe.
Edie was a true aficionado of the arts. She loved music, especially classical music, and Klezmer music, fine arts, ethnic food and culture. She had a lifelong love of learning and experiencing new things. Edie traveled all over Europe when she lived in Germany, took a cross country trip with Meyer and her sister Evelyn and a 50th anniversary trip to China, Japan and Korea with Meyer and Lori. It was the trip of a lifetime.
Edie was truly beloved by her nieces and nephews and many of them considered her their “other mother.” She was the essence of unconditional love and will be truly missed.
In order to honor Edie’s legacy as an artist, a scholarship is being created in her memory for a student of limited means who wishes to study fine art at Rutgers University:
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made to the Rutgers University Foundation in support of the Mason Gross School of the Arts IMO Ida (Edie) Schlosser.
