

Jean L. Tintle, 100, of Whiting, NJ, passed away the morning of September 3rd, 2025. Born in Butler, NJ to the late Clarence and Irene Decker, she attended Butler schools and in 1946 received a Bachelor of Music Degree from Syracuse University, where she was elected to Sigma Alpha Iota, an Honors music sorority. She and her husband, Corwin, were married that year and raised their family in Pompton Lakes. When her children were of school age, she enrolled in graduate school and received a Master’s Degree in Library Science from William Paterson College.
In 1966 she became Director of Lincoln Park (NJ) Public Library, guiding the library through its transition from a one-room facility to a large new building. She later became the Media Specialist at Butler High School, where she remained until her retirement in 1986. At this point she and her husband moved to Leisure Village West, in Manchester, NJ. There she became an accompanist for several soloists, entertaining for the many clubs in the Village. Corwin, also an accomplished pianist, often joined her in these performances.
Jean was a life-long crossword enthusiast. She was a member of the National Puzzlers’ League and competed for 22 years in the American Crossword Tournament, winning several trophies in the Senior division. She was a charter member of the Friends of the Library, Manchester. In 2001 she and her husband moved to Crestwood Manor, where she volunteered in several capacities.
She was predeceased by her husband Corwin in 2007 and by her son-in-law, Raymond Schofield in 2017. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Schofield of Mount Laurel, NJ and Cutler, ME; a son David (and Barbara) of Magnolia, DE; three grandchildren: Dan (and Tracy Zengro) Schofield of Wyndmoor, PA; Martha (and Andrew) Bergholtz of Cherry Hill, NJ; Evan Tintle Cerqueira (and Armanda Cerqueira) of Little Falls, NJ; and three great-grandchildren: Adam and Samantha Schofield and Brendan Bergholtz.
A memorial Service will be held at Crestwood Manor on Tuesday September 23rd at 10:00 AM.
