Alfred Curtis Powell

A.C. “Sarge” Powell, 88, of Wichita Falls died Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at a local hospice. A graveside memorial service with military honors has been scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Crestview Memorial Park directed by Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.

A.C. was born February 4, 1922 in Spartanburg, SC to George and Lillian McDowell Powell. He retired from the United States Air Force after serving during WWII and the Korean War. Following his time in the service, he owned several gas stations here in Wichita Falls. He was a member of the local VFW and a lifetime member of the VFW in Midland, a member of Faith Masonic Lodge 1158 AF & AM, and a member of the Air Force Association. A.C. attended the Baptist church and loved to travel.

Mr. Powell is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Juanita Marie Mercer Powell in 1988; brothers, Julius Powell, George Powell, Jim Powell, Herbert Powell, Leslie Powell; sisters, Cora Mae Edmonds, Olita Settles; grandchildren, Randy Dale Mercer, W.C. “Bill” Mercer, and Lisa Marie Olsen.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Betty Mercer of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Joseph Edward Mercer, Terry Lee Mercer, Charla Ann Helm; ten great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
