

Charles Homer Matthews, 78, of Wichita Falls died Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at a local hospital. Services have been scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home Chapel. Interment with full military honors will follow at Crestview Memorial Park.
Charlie was born October 3, 1932 in Scranton, SC to James S. and Frances S. Lee Matthews. He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War retiring after 23 years of service. April 21, 1955 he married Bessie Laraux in Lake Charles, LA and together they raised three sons. He was raised in the Pentecostal Holiness Church and considered himself a protestant. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and NCO Club, and liked spending time at the Missile Club. He loved doing carpentry work at home and to watch boxing and westerns and listen to gospel music. He loved his dog, Curly, and loved being with his family and doing things with his grandchildren.
Mr. Matthews is preceded in death by his parents, James and Frances Matthews; and sister, Linnie Ruth Hanna.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Bess Matthews; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles “Sonny” Matthews of Mansfield, TX, Jeffrey and Sherry Matthews, Michael and Molly Matthews all of Wichita Falls; sister, Mary Sue Miles of Scranton, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Brenda Matthews of Florence, SC; eight grandchildren, Jason Matthews, Lauren Matthews, Nicole Jones, Rob Matthews, Denielle Matthews, Ryan Matthews, Michael Allen, Cameron Allen; four great-grandchildren and two more on the way.
Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2011 at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.
