Dewayne was born November 24, 1952 in Wichita Falls to Vaughn and Rosie (Walters) Leath. He married Linda Owen on December 29, 1972. He cherished Linda, the love of his life, and together they were blessed with 48 years of marriage and two children. When his children were young, much of his time was devoted to coaching their teams in baseball, soccer and softball. He influenced many lives as a positive and encouraging coach. Once Dewayne became a grandfather his greatest joy was being called “Papa D”. His world revolved around his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a staple in the stands at all of their games or activities. Spending time at the lake with family and friends made him happy. Dewayne served in the National Guard. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Many people remember him as an employee of Safeway before he spent 35 years with Empire Paper Company. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include wife, Linda; two children, Kevin Leath and wife Brandy and Karie McAfee and husband Dudley; 5 grandchildren, Lauren, Ella, Jacob, Benjamin, and Gavin; three step grandchildren, Ben, Kaela, and Sam; brother in laws, Stephen and Roger Owen; as well as, his beloved dog, Jewel.
Dewayne had a servant’s heart. Acts of kindness were like breathing to him. His genuine spirit will be missed by so many. Donations in his name may be made to Boys & Girls Clubs of Wichita Falls or P.E.T.S. Clinic.
