Donald Phelan

Donald Joseph Phelan, 73 of Wichita Falls, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010 at his residence. He was born on January 17, 1937 in Bloomington, IL to the late Joseph Phelan and Margaret Gillen Phelan. He was married to Ruth Metcalf Phelan who preceded him in death in April, 2010. Don was a member of the Elks Lodge #1105 in Wichita Falls and was a 1955 graduate of Wichita Falls High where he was actively involved with the alumni association in organizing the Old High reunions for his class. Don raced stock cars from 1957 – 1965 and was responsible for bringing the first “Go – Carts” to Wichita Falls in 1958. He was a co-founder and cornerstone of Texhoma’s Racers Reunion since its inception in 2007.

He is survived by one brother, Bobby Phelan of Gainesville, TX; two sons, Trent and Kerry Phelan of Wichita Falls; one daughter, Patti Hosford and husband Brad of Kansas City, MO; one stepson, Charles Metcalf and wife Jannette London of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Caitlin, Megan and Shannon Phelan all of Wichita Falls and Ryan and Sean Hosford of Kansas City, MO; step grandchildren, Jeff Metcalf and wife Meghan of Dallas, Chad Metcalf and wife Laura of Dallas, Crystal Lucas and husband Scott of Wichita Falls, Melissa O’Donohue of Wichita Falls, Mandy Muehlberger of Wichita Falls and Robbie Muehlberger of Colorado; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Talley.

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Mike Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Alan Liebel, Jerry Douglas, James Skinner, Mike Montaboy, Steven Young, Virgil Smith, Scott Hunter, Weldon Daniels and Kenneth Hoefner. Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Tyner, Sonny Roberts, Eddie Musick, Don Long, Terry Davis, Jerry Eastham, Jerry Davis and Carl Griffin.
