

Donald Maynard Schilling, who was beloved and strong spirited, passed away on December 8, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on June 7, 1939, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Luther and Dorothy Schilling, Donald was known for his generous spirit, hard-working nature, and athletic prowess.
In his early years, Donald was the starting quarterback for Jefferson Senior High School in Roanoke, Virginia. He played all of his high school games at Victory Stadium, a venue later featured in the movie "Remember the Titans."
At the age of 17, Donald joined the military, where he continued to excel in football. He was selected for the PACAF "All Stars" football team and played in the Rice Bowl Football Game in Korea, a notable event attended by 80,000 people, where he threw a touchdown pass. Donald also played as quarterback and team co-captain for the Wiesbaden Football Team, leading them to an undefeated season and the USAFE Championship. He was the coordinator for the first Freedom Fest held at SAFB in 1990. After 27 years of dedicated service, he retired from the Air Force in 1983 and continued his career with the Civil Service for another 18 years.
In 1963, Donald married Louise M. Haglin, and together they raised two children, Angela Marie and Donald Maynard Schilling Jr. He is survived by his wife, Louise M. Schilling, children Angela Marie and her husband Oscar Cruzalegui, Donald Schilling Jr., and Donna Schilling, as well as his granddaughter, Ruby Fitzgerald and her husband Patrick.
Donald had a passion for coaching football and baseball and enjoyed playing racquetball. He was known for his outgoing personality and was a wonderful organizer. Everyone who knew him loved being around him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, in honor of Donald's generous and giving nature.
